After reading some of the reviews, I HAD to see this Chinese control freak!
So, stopping in on a Saturday afternoon when the place had a more relaxed atmosphere I found the ambiance nice and the service impeccable. The owner perched at the bar in a position to observe every corner of the floor and I felt scrutinized as I ate. But, perhaps this is why the decor and service is what it is, he's right on top of it and that shows that he is working hard to maintain his establishment.
I found the appetizers to be run of the mill with the exception of the short ribs that were quite tasty. The cashew chicken and beef & broccoli appeared to have the same sauce and were bland.
Decent decor, great floor staff, ok food and wired out owner. If nothing else, he adds character.

I am a recent transplant from San Francisco and find that the Palais De Jade is the closest thing to real Chinese food that there is in reno. I will admit that recipes are changed to make up for unavailable ingredients, and it would not be my favorite if I was at home, but for the area it could be considered the best. A bit pricey for the portion size, I recommend the eggplant.
In the city it is well known that the quality of the food will be inversely proportional to the service. I think that the Palais De Jade is just that kind of Chinese food. I welcome the short and condescending demeanor of the manager, it makes me feel at home. If you are not familiar with Chinese culture or character, than I do not recommend this restaurant.

Food is usually great, but manager/owner is an authoritarian freak!!! If you are not satisfied with a dish you risk being kicked out!! I have experienced this personally and watched it happen to other customers. His demeanor causes his servers to come off as robotic with no personality. This is because they are probably so scared that he will embarrass them in front of the entire dining room if they make a mistake.

We have eaten at the Palais de Jade before and found the food excellent and the service adequate. Some reviews we read were quite negative but we had not experienced the same problems.
The day before Valentine?s Day my wife called to order the Chinese Treasure Mandarin Peking Duck (24 hours advance notice) for dinner on the following day.
The very rude employee who answered the phone told her ?It?s a holiday and our cooks will be busy and we will not prepare the dish you are requesting?. She then asked if he would please check for her and call her back.
The Palais de Jade owner called back and my wife asked him why they would not honor our request when they had 24 hours advance notice. He replied ?We are not going to please just one customer and displease ten others?. He then told my wife she was stupid if she couldn?t understand how busy they were and my wife asked why they didn?t say on the menu that they wouldn?t prepare certain dishes on holidays. He then screamed ?I won?t permit you to enter my restaurant? and hung up on her.

This place has good basic Chinese food, looks a little fancy but prices are average. Lunch specials even on weekends are priced at $7 or 8, but portions are really small. Located at a strip mall. I did not notice an overbearing manager and the wait staff seemed energetic and eager. I would recommend it for basic good Chinese food.

If your looking for good Chinese food at a reasonable price, look no further. Palais DE Jade offers a solid menu witha wide variety of choices. While this is not a family restaurant, the food is very inviting. Keep in mind that when you visit a family owned Chinese restaurant, that the staff may seem a little stand-off ""ish"". That's only because they want to please and english is a second language. I highly recommend a visit to Palais DE Jade. You will not be disappointed!

I have been to this place a few times and its always the same, typical americanized chinese food and noisy place. The lady that manages the place is very disrespectful if her employees and is a real slave driver, she always has a real mean look on her face. Service is like they don't care, but with a boss like that , maybe thats why. Much better real Chinese food can be found just across the street at Shechwan Garden...looks like a small hole in the wall place but the food is terrific and real Chinese, they actuall have a special menu for the real chinese food.

They're so into ABSOLUTE Perfection, but they make a terrible mistake: they let it show.
Every time I go, I'm almost quaking in my shoes, worrying that my waiter might make evern the tiniest mistake... in which case, he/she will be absolutely REAMED by the owner/manager. If they're reading this:
1) Never do your corrections in public.
2) Never DIS your own employees, they appear to the cust as part of YOUR team, you demean your whole place whenever you do this.
3) Allow smiles.
4) Keep Cooking, Keep the wonderful room: you're my very absolute favorite... even if my wife is now TOO INTIMIDATED TO COME WITH ME.
