Been a going to The Vortex since I was 18. You HAVE to try this place!
Have tried most of the menu at least once, and most everything is good and a safe bet. The appetizers are good (the cheese dip will make your mouth bless you). If you get a burger you should definitely order it with tots. I would recommend the Double Coronary Bypass just to at least say you have done it once, but I personally prefer the Yokohama Mama and the Tasmanian Devil Burgers. Attractive staff, good service, chill atmosphere, and great food will keep you returning for more.
I drive 45mins just to go to this place, and have taken many a date here with success. This location is 10x better than the other.

This iconic burger joint in the heart of little 5 is a mecca for the burger loving folks around the Atlanta area. Best burger in atlanta hands down is the Double bypass burger with a side of tots. Every gooey bite of this debaucherous will send you into a food induced coma. They have a great beer selection and the Atmosphere is great as is the music selection. Trust me go eat drink and be merry.

Although I've been to this Vortex a few times, and in the past have had good service with better-than-average bar food, I had to give only one star due to the recent bad experience I had there.
Two nights ago, I and 5 of my friends attempted to dine in at this establishment. It was around midnight. The hostess led us outside and up a flight of stairs to a small upstairs dining room. The place was literally EMPTY. The people in my party were the only diners there. She led us all the way to the back of the room to one of the larger tables. However, the table was pushed back close to the far wall. So that my friends could easily access the other half of the table (so they could pull out their chairs, comfortably remove their coats, etc.), we moved the table about 3 feet away from the wall. No big deal, right?
The server, a 30-something black dude with braids pulled back, walked out and immediately said, with an extremely disgusted look on his face, ""Why did you move the table?"" We were all taken aback by his attitude, as we tried to stammer out the fact that we couldn't easily access the 3 chairs on the one side of the table. He rolled his eyes and walked away.
Needless to say, we had suddenly lost our appetites. We walked out. We went to Gladys Knight's Chicken 'n Waffles around the corner and had a great experience with a nice, smiling staff.
With the plethora of dining choices in Atlanta, I find it hard to believe that the Vortex can afford to provide this type of service. Yes, you have good burgers, but if you have jerks delivering them to the tables, then I'd rather go hungry!

Just moving to GA I was excited to finally get the chance to visit the famous Vortex! I was a little upset that my 14 year old son wasn't able to join me since he would have LOVED the awesome enviroment. The place was packed but there wasn't a wait to be seated. They do need expand the building to give more seating, hopefully one day though. Our waitress wasn't very friendly and hardly made an effort to serve my table. My husband ordered the hell burger (I think that's what it was called) and loved it! I was hoping to be brave enough to try the Elvis burger but right before being rushed to order I chickened out and went with the cardic one - which was fantastic! Love the decor of the resturant and the shops around it make it even better. I vow to challenge my comfort zone one day and conquer the mighty Elvis...hopefully next time we'll get a waitress that meets the awesomeness of the food.

This is a very cool bar and grill in L5P. They hold a bike night every Thursday night in the parking lot that has a huge turnout. Their burgers are awesome along with just about every other thing on the menu. I just wish they applied the same no smoking inside rules as most Georgia restaurants do now.

the Vortex never disappoints! If you're a burger junkie and are open to trying something new - check out the Vortex.
Wonder what a burger with peanut butter, fried bananas and bacon on top tastes like? try the Elvis burger! a side of crispy plump tater tots and an enormous selection of beers from around the world will make your day any day of the week.

I have to confess... I never order a burger at the Vortex. And I know, in the Burger Capital of America (Wall St Journal said it, not me) this is one of THE spots for a proper Atlanta hamburger.
But I always sub chicken at the Vortex, specifically with the Big Fat Jerk (now called the Rajin-Cajun) because the burgers are a little bit too big. I wish they'd take a cue from George's and offer two sizes of burgers. Plus my thought is that if I'm going to order something gooey, cheesy, slathered in sauce and difficult to eat.... I would rather it NOT be ground beef. That just makes it into a giant mess that makes holding on to the burger more of a priority than actually eating it.
The array of burger variations--that include the sloppy likes of guac, bananas, teriyaki glaze, chili, pesto sauce, etc--just seem to go better with (gasp) chicken. Regardless on the beef vs veggie vs bison vs chicken debate, I give universal kudos for the best tator tots in the city, and for carrying Magic Hat beer on draft.

My wife and I drive over 30 minutes to go to the Vortex, and we were Not let down. I can see why they were voted #1 burger in Atlanta. Everyone talked about how RUDE the are, NOT the experience that we had the server could not have been nicer, great easy going staff welcome you with open arms. I ate the Coronary Bypass Burger, just the innovation to put a fried egg on a cheese burger, is Awesome. A wide variety of food, but so many burgers to pick from. We ate the Cheesy Cheddar balls as an app, man the were great. I can see why this is a staple of the city, we will return again soon. DO yourself a favor, take in the Vortex, it's worth it.

Here is a summary of issues we have had since being signed up with the services from City Search.
Dishonest about how services are billed.
-I was given a different impression of how the site operates after talking to the citysearch employee for over 2 hours. I was given the impression that the site made income from adds placed by larger companies in the form of banner adds or featured sections. I have been involved with several different sites and they offer free advertisements and paid advertisements if you want a banner or bigger adds.
-Their was about 1-2 hours of conversation before the signup agreement where there was no mention of the service costing anything. Then during the signup process I was abruptly asked for my credit card information and was told the service would be $10/month, which is no problem, ""with an investment of $1000/month."" That's when I immediately stated that I can't afford this. Instead of looking out for the interest of me the customer, she was more intent on making a sale. She then replied that it is only a limit. She stated that ""it is $1000 at a dollar a click, but if 1000 people contact you then it's worth every dollar."" This statement would further imply that $1=1 contact. I at this point was under the understanding that the ""Click"" that was discussed earlier was in reference to clicking the link for contact information.. With this in conjunction of the possible number of people in Portland looking for a makeup artist for a wedding, I was under the impression I would be looking at $20-$50 a month. In actuality the service entails $1 per profile view not a dollar per click. If this was described and explained correctly I would have under no circumstances signed up for City Search. Not only is the explanation blatantly confusing but also borders dishonest. I would like to add that after finding out how services were billed I immediately attempted to terminate the service. Given the circumstances an exception could have been made for an early termination of services.
The profile itself was incomplete and poorly constructed.
-The profile was put together with very little care being a victim of numerous grammatical errors and obvious misspellings. Not only is this unacceptable especially for an add company but makes my business look careless and incompetent.
-Second I was also listed more than once, one of which was under the wrong category. there was one profile listed under Cosmetics which was correct, but another profile listed under Hair Salons. I am not a salon and have nothing to do with hair which should have been pretty apparent during the 2 hour phone conversation with the person signing me up. I signed up for one listing under Cosmetics. This looks like nothing more than a tactic to rack up profile views at a dollar a click especially when comparing the number of people looking for a makeup artist for their wedding with the number of people looking for a place to get their hair cut.
Out of the $1600.00+ that was charged to our business card for the over 1900 clicks we had in that 3 month period we were contacted by a total of 2 people. There is no way that many actual people clicked on that page.
Simply on an added note, In an attempt to sort all of this out, I had my significant other and partner in the business Jonathan call and try to work everything out. The gentlemen that he spoke to in customer service was not only uncompassionate of our situation but also very unprofessional. Very few questions were asked pertaining to how he could help and upon seeing that things were far from getting resolved he asked to speak to a supervisor. He was flat out told no. He than had to pry to find out who he could talk to for help. He then had to ask there isn't any one else to talk to? No supervisor or manager? at that point he was then told after a long pause simply they're in a meeting.

Great food in a fun atmosphere that only East Atlanta can provide. Only downside I've ever had here is when you're with a party larger than 6, they do not split checks...no matter what. It doesn't seem that bad until you are faced with the challenge of doing it yourself. They ask that you write down which items on the check you had, figure out the tax, and then pay with cash or card. It's 2009 and comupter systems do amazing things nowaways with the push of a single button, such as split checks. I was a server and I know it's possible. 5 star rating comes when I can split a check. Other than that it's all good!

I love the vortex! Me and my boyfriend go there all the time. He loves all their burgers and I love their original veggie burger. I'm a vegetarian, so this is my favorite place to go, when I'm craving a veggieburger. Another secret: the tater tots are way better than the french fries. Also, if your a vegetarian, do not order the potato salad. There is bacon mixed in it. Overall, The Vortex is a great place to chill for lunch, or have some drinks at night.

This ain't your daddy's Cheers bar. The Vortex is attitude on steriods. As you walk in the door ...of a skull! You hear the driving beats of Jimi, Janice, and Nirvana oh yes and Marvin. Don't get it twisted, the atmosphere is both eclectic and electric. In the words of Nirvana, "" Come as you are"", you will be greeted with a smile and a great black and tan. The menu contains the best burgers and fries. Ranging from a blue cheese burger to a avacado and perschutto cheese burger, to your plain ole burger...burger. Good times , good fun good music. Drinking is for the HARDCORE, rookies need not apply. Located in Little 5 points , it is Marta accesible with a cab station across the street for you drunks and an amalgamation of quaint shops in the area. They dont close it starts at eleven and closes at I dont know. Heck I want to go now and it's 8am. Yeah , I need help but I love this place

The Service Staff are Meant to be Rude, that is the draw to this Hamburger Joint.
If you are easily offended don't go there.
This place is great! I love it.
I am wrting this in response to the person (GTgirl01) who posted:
""Rude Manager"" on 2/19/08.

The burgers at Vortex are very good, but the customer service is horrendous. I ate there the other night with my brother, boyfriend, and mother. We ordered a second pitcher of beer as we were finishing our meal. My brother still had a half glass of beer in front of him when a guy walked up to the table. He identified himself as the manager, said we had been using the table for two hours (in reality, it was probably an hour and 15 minutes), and that they had a lot people waiting to eat. In more words or less, he told us to leave. As our mouths were hanging open in shock, we had no response. A fantastic burger is not worth such rudeness. I've been a long time fan of Vortex, but we won't be going back!

The Vortex is easily my favorite restaurant in Atlanta. A lot of the reviews here mention how great their burgers are and its for a reason; the burgers here are fantastic and you have an insane variety from which to choose. Some people may complain about service, but I can honestly say it would take some absolutely terrible service (I mean, actual insults to my face or something of that ilk) for me to give up The Vortex.
Another great thing about this place is that no kids are allowed! So, no worries about your meal being ruined because some rude mom and dad can't be bothered to take their crying kid outside.
The prices are also really great for what you get and the decor is fanciful and fun (although, the Little Five Points location has better decorations than the Peachtree location in my opinion)
But to address some of the negatives in other reviews; some of the servers aren't the cheeriest bunch, but that being said I've never had any server be blatantly rude to me and I've always had quick and reliable service (and I eat here a lot and have had been served by many different members of the staff). The Vortex has dubbed itself a ""No Idiot Zone."" If you ask questions that can be answered by reading the menu the servers will most likely be annoyed (it's written on the menu). So, if you want a server who's Miss Mary Sunshine and answers inane questions that you could have answered yourself just by reading, then steer clear. If you want that kind of nonsense save yourself the trouble of being offended and go to T.G.I.Fridays.
Also, The Vortex in Little Five Points is on the small side and probably wouldn't be great for big groups. However, The Vortex does have another location on Peachtree Street that is more spacious, so go there if you have a group.
If you're in the mood for a fantastic burger and drink and aren't easily offended then The Vortex is for you.

I have been to the Vortex many times & the food is always great They serve you quick & efficiently but certainly are not known for their customer service. We did take a group there last night & they aren't very accommodating to large groups. They encouraged us to split up or else we would have to wait for a really long time. I had called in advance & the first time they were very nice & said ""no problem"" just let us know when you have a firm # of guests. The second time I called they basically said that they wouldn't accommodate us & that we would have to wait just like everyone else. I understand that they do not take reservations, but they did make it seem that would at least try to accommodate us on the first call.
The food is good but do not go here if you have more than 4 or 5 people.
